Teaching children to share is a fundamental part of their socio-emotional development. From an early age, children must learn essential social skills such as empathy, cooperative play, and generosity. Did you know that children are ready to share from the age of 4 or 5? Before that age, they are in an egocentric stage where everything happens from their perspective. However, over time and with proper guidance, they can learn to see the world in a more collaborative and enriching way.

Many times, as parents, it is easy to feel distressed when our children do not want to share. It is important to remember that forcing them to share can generate confusion and anxiety. Instead, we can set an example and create situations that encourage group play. Saying positive phrases like “How nice of you to let Pepito play with your toy!” can motivate them to share naturally and without pressure.

Another effective strategy is to promote social situations where children can enjoy with others their age. Group play, both at home and in parks or extracurricular activities, is an excellent way to teach children to share and to work as a team. In addition, it is essential to avoid comparing them with other children; each has its own pace and will learn to share when they are ready.

If a conflict arises over an object among children under 4 years old, it is best to distract them with another activity. This helps prevent tension and redirect their attention to something more positive. Remember that empathy and other social skills are acquired over time, so patience and continuous support are crucial.

At Cuentología, we address the topic of sharing with our audiobooks. One of them is “Little Roller and Her Giant Lesson.” In this story, it narrates the tale of Inés, a squirrel expert in collecting acorns who discovers the joy of sharing her precious acorns with other animals in the park. Through a series of adventures and activities, children will learn that being generous not only makes others happy but also enriches their own experience and fun. Invite your children to listen to this audiobook and participate in the included challenge to experience a screen-free and full of learning time together!
