Learn to Control Anger: Tips for Parents and Children

A guide to help our children manage anger effectively

By Cuentologia Published February 02, 2022
Anger is a natural emotion that we all experience at some point. For children, especially those aged 3 to 8 years, learning to control anger can be quite a challenge. This emotion arises when something doesn't go as expected and can trigger physical reactions such as an increased heart rate and muscle tension. As parents, it is crucial to teach our children to handle anger in a constructive and positive manner.

Staying calm is key. Your children learn by observing you, so make sure to model calm behavior even in difficult situations. Also, teach them to identify anger and talk about what they feel. After they have calmed down, discuss the situations that caused their anger and help them name the emotion without fear. Early identification is a crucial step in managing anger.

Use everyday situations to teach them to solve problems without succumbing to anger. For example, if someone makes an improper maneuver in traffic, explain to your child how you decide to handle the situation calmly. Take a deep breath, slow down, and play a relaxing song. These types of practices show children that there are alternative ways to face problems without reacting with anger.

Sports and physical activities are also excellent for channeling tension. Make sure your child engages in regular sports, has a balanced diet, and gets enough rest. These healthy habits not only help manage anger but also promote general well-being. Additionally, activities such as drawing and writing are valuable tools for expressing emotions, especially anger.

At Cuentología, we approach the topic of anger in a creative and educational way. Our audio story "The Ink That Paints Differently" is an excellent tool to help children understand and manage their emotions. Through the story of René, the octopus who learns to deal with his anger, children can identify and learn techniques to control anger. After listening to the story, the self-control traffic light activity is a practical tool you can build at home with your child to help them manage their anger effectively.
